Description

Introduce your child to classic literature comprehension with these read-at-home short extracts and comprehension questions.

Children’s literature has changed and many of the favourite books that they read today have a different quality of language to that of the old classics. Does this mean classics are outdated? Not at all! A good grounding in Reading Comprehension should cover a range of styles including historical texts. What’s more, these books can take your child on a journey of adventure, faraway in both place and time.

Designed to promote enquiry and exploration of the text, these classic literature comprehension quizzes will familiarise your child with popular classic children’s texts and offer just enough to make them want to pick up the books themselves!

The questions cover areas of assessment focus used by teachers throughout Key Stage 2 and will support your child in:

  • retrieving and recording information
  • drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives
  • predicting what might happen from details stated and implied
  • identifying how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning
  • checking that the text makes sense to them, discussing understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context
  • relating texts to their social, cultural and historical contexts and literary traditions

We recommend this pack to parents with children in Year 5 (particularly those heading for 11+ exams) and Year 6.

Extracts are from some of the best books in children’s literature:

  • Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
  • The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling
  • The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell
  • Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
